AMD – IMPLEMENTING SYNTHETIC APERTURE RADAR IN SPACE WITH AMD VERSAL ADAPTIVE SOCS – 1 Hour Online presentation

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is a technique used to generate high-resolution radar
images with a relatively small antenna, effectively simulating the performance of a much
larger and more costly one. The method takes advantage of the radar platform’s motion
relative to the target to construct detailed images.

While several algorithms exist for SAR processing, all demand substantial high-performance computing resources. Traditionally, in satellite and airborne applications, raw
SAR data is transmitted to the ground for processing — a process that creates a significant communications bottleneck and restricts the volume of SAR data that can be
gathered during a mission.

With the advent of modern space-grade adaptive SoCs, SAR data can now be processed efficiently on board the radar platform. This enables the transmission of completed images to the ground, eliminating the communications bottleneck and allowing a
greater number of SAR images to be captured as the spacecraft or aircraft passes over
the Earth.

In this presentation, we will explore on-orbit SAR processing using a back-projection
algorithm and outline its implementation on an AMD Versal™ adaptive SoC. We will also
share an update on the space qualification of the XQR Versal™ adaptive SoCs, including
the latest results on reliability and radiation performance
